The world is in a bad state after the Calamity. In order to survive, the only option is to leave the cities and make your way to the mountains. It is up to you to decide where you want to go and how you are going to get there.
In order to reach the Bastion, you need to collect the Cores. Once you reach the Bastion, you can find the game’s narrator, Rucks, who will give you instructions on how to reach the next level. After completing each level, you can unlock the collectible items and weapons that you have found.
